How to Improve Your Mood with Food
Most of us think that comfort foods are not good for us and that we have to avoid them. At times, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be very healthy and good for you. There are several foods that, when you consume them, may better your mood. When you feel a little down and need an emotional boost, try some of these.
Eggs, would you believe, are terrific for helping you fight depression. You must make sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. The egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are high in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be terrific for lifting up your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–function better. Consume an egg and cheer up!
Put together some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be elevated by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that tells your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more serotonin in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Nuts, in addition to raising your mood, can be a superb protein source.
If you want to overcome depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you overcome depression.
It’s not difficult to drive away your bad mood when you are eating grains. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all great for helping you feel happier. They help you feel full also which can actually help to make your mood better. Feeling starved can really bring you down! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your glucose levels which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.
Your mood could really be helped by green tea. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while at the same calming the rest of your body. You knew green tea could help you become healthier. Now you know that it helps you to lift your moods as well!
You can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are bad for you so you can feel better! Try some of these hints instead.
