How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

In general, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and have to be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be extremely nourishing and good for you. There are several foods that, when you consume them, can boost your mood. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly wonderful at beating back depression. You must make sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk especially, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–run better. Try eating an egg and jolly up!

Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all great for helping to boost your mood. This is because these nuts are loaded with magnesium, which helps to increase your production of serotonin. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Not only that but nuts, in particular, are a great protein food source.

If you wish to overcome depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight back depression.

Grains can be good for overcoming a terrible mood. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are excellent at helping you have a happier mood. They fill you up better and that can help you with your moods as well. Feeling starved can be terrible! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your glucose levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You were just expecting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea has been found to be rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid actually stimulates brain waves. This helps raise your mental acuity while relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you feel better. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood as well!

So you see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are not good for you to feel better! Try a few of these suggestions instead.
