Most of us think that comfort foods are bad for us and that we need to avoid them. Often, if the comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this holds true. Other times, comfort foods can be very healthy and good for us to consume. There are a number of foods that, when you eat them, may improve your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, you might be surprised to discover, are great at battling depression. Just see to it that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to elevate your mood. This is because they help in bettering the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that affect your mood. Eat an egg and feel a lot better!

Put together a trail mixfrom different seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these foods are loaded with magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more serotonin you have, the better you will feel. Nuts, on top of improving your mood, can be a superb source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent if you wish to be in a better mood. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.

It’s easy to drive away your bad mood when you eat grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly excellent for helping increase your happiness levels. They help you feel full too which can truly help to improve your mood. Feeling famished can be awful! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are not hard to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your glucose levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Your mood could really be helped by green tea. You knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies show that this particular amino acid can basically induce brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to get healthy when you drink green tea. Now you are aware that it can help improve your mood too!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try several of these instead!
