Turn to Food to Boost Your Mood
A lot of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are terrible and must be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this is very true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be very nutritious and good for you. There are several foods that, when you consume them, may better your mood. If you feel a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try several of these.
Eggs, would you believe, are terrific for helping you battle depression. Just see to it that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the yolks especially, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can be terrific for raising your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Consume an egg and be happy!
Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all good for improving your mood. This is because these foods are high in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The more of this chemical in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, specifically, are a great source of protein.
If you want to battle depression, try eating some cold water fish. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.
Grains can be good for overcoming a bad mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all good for helping you feel better. These foods can help you feel full for longer too, which can help your mood too. Feeling famished can truly make you feel terrible! These grains can elevate your mood as it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your glucose levels which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.
Your mood could actually be helped by green tea. You just knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is packed full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while simultaneously calming the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you become healthier. Now you are aware that green tea helps you to raise your moods too!
See, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try a couple of of these suggestions instead.
