Foods That Make Your Mood Better

Most of us think that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we need to keep away from them. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be completely healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. Several foods actually do elevate your mood when you consume them. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, you may be surprised to learn, are terrific at combating depression. You should be sure, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. Every time you wish to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, especially the yolks, are full of B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be terrific for lifting up your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try consuming a few eggs to jolly up!

Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be raised by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The higher your levels of serotonin, the happier you are going to feel. Nuts, on top of elevating your mood, can be a super protein source.

If you wish to battle depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.

Some grains are actually excellent for repelling bad moods. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are excellent at helping you feel better. They fill you up better and that can help improve your moods as well. Feeling starved can truly bring you down! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not difficult to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You were just expecting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is found to be rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid actually induces brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while simultaneously calming your body. You likely already knew how easy it is to get healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that green tea helps you to elevate your moods also!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try several of these instead!
