Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood

For the most part, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and need to be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this is very true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. Some foods actually do improve your mood when you eat them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually wonderful at beating back depression. Just be sure that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to elevate your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–function better. Consume an egg and cheer up!

Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all great for elevating your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given moment. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you are going to feel. Not just that, nuts, specifically, are a fantastic protein source.

If you wish to battle depression, try eating some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all loaded with omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.

Grains can be great for overcoming a terrible mood. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are excellent at helping you have a happier mood. These grains can help you feel full for longer also, which can help your mood too. Feeling famished can be a real downer! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not hard to digest. You digest these grains more quickly than other foods which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You were just anticipating to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is packed full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while also calming the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you become so much healthier. Now you are aware that green tea helps you to raise your moods also!

So you see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are terrible for you just so to feel better! Try a few of these instead!
