Turn to Food to Boost Your Mood

Mostly, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and should be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether nutritious and it’s good for you to consume them. Several foods actually do elevate your mood when you consume them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, you may be surprised to find out, are great at battling depression. Just see to it that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. The yolk is the most crucial part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the yolks especially, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat an egg and feel a lot better!

Put together a trail mixfrom different seeds and nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all good for elevating your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that tells your brain how you feel day in and day out. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Not just that, nuts, in particular, are a great protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent if you want to feel better. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you fight your depression.

It’s not hard to fight your bad mood when you are eating grains. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are excellent at helping you be happier. They help you feel full too which can truly help to make your mood better. Feeling famished can truly bring you down! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is truly great for your mood. You knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is high in a certain amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you become healthier. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood also!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try these suggestions instead!
