How to Boost Your Mood with Food

Mostly, people have been conditioned to think that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and have to be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be completely healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that basically can improve your moods when you eat them. If you seem to be a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are fantastic for helping you combat depression. Just be sure that you do not throw away the egg yolk. Whenever you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolk particularly, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can truly help you boost your mood. This is because the B vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Consume an egg and cheer up!

Put together a trail mixout of various seeds and nuts. Your mood can be improved by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. This is possible as these foods have a bunch of magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The more serotonin you have, the better you will feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a fantastic protein food source.

If you wish to fight depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3s. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.

Grains can be good for overcoming a terrible mood. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all great for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They can help you feel full for longer too, which is a mood improver. Feeling hungry can be a real downer! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. You digest these grains faster than other foods which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Your mood can truly be helped by green tea. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is high in a certain amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid actually stimulates brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while at the same relaxing the rest of your body. You knew green tea could help you be better. Now you are aware that green tea helps you to lift your moods as well!

You can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are bad for you so you can feel better! Test out these hints instead!
