How to Boost Your Mood with Food

Many of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are terrible and must be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be completely nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that basically can raise your moods when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are terrific for helping you combat depression. Just see to it that you do not throw away the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolk especially, are stuffed full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to boost your mood. This is because they help in bettering the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that affect your mood. Consume an egg and feel better!

Make some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is possible since these foods have a bunch of magnesium which promotes serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that tells your brain how you feel day in and day out. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are good if you wish to be in a better mood. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can earnestly elevate your mood.

Grains can be good for fighting a bad mood. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are fantastic at helping you feel happier. They help you feel full also which can really help to better your mood. It’s not hard to feel a little bit off when you feel famished! These grains can help your mood elevate because it’s easy for your body to digest them. You digest these foods faster than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can actually induce brain waves. This helps improve your mental focus while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not hard to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that applies to your mood too!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try a few of these hints instead.
