Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood
Many of us believe that comfort foods are bad for us and that we need to keep away from them. At times, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be very nutritious and good for you. There are a number of foods that actually can raise your moods when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try some of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly wonderful at beating back depression. Just see to it that you do not throw away the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Consume an egg and feel a lot happier!
Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be raised by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because these foods are loaded with magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that tells your brain how you feel at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a fantastic protein source.
If you would like to defeat depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can earnestly boost your mood.
Grains can be excellent for fighting a terrible mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually excellent for helping boost your happiness levels. These foods fill you up better and that can help you with your moods as well. Feeling starved can be a real downer! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood sugar which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.
Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You just knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid called L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while also calming the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you feel healthier. And now you are aware that it can help improve your mood as well!
Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these suggestions instead.
