Turn to Food to Boost Your Mood

Most of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are terrible and should be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, comfort foods can be very nourishing and good for us to eat. Some foods honestly do elevate your mood when you consume them. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional boost, test out a couple of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are wonderful for helping you fight depression. Just make sure that you do not toss the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, particularly the egg yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you boost your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–function better. Consume an egg and jolly up!

Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all wonderful for elevating your mood. This is possible since these foods are rich in magnesium which raises your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that directs your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more serotonin in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Not just that, nuts, particularly, are a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you are wanting to beat back depression. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can earnestly elevate your mood.

Grains can be good for overcoming a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually excellent for helping raise your happiness levels. These grains can help you feel full for longer as well, helping you feel better. It’s not difficult to feel low when you are starving! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood sugar which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid actually stimulates brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while simultaneously making the rest of your body more relaxed. You likely already knew it is not hard to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that green tea helps you to raise your moods too!

You can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are bad for you so you can feel better! Try several of these instead!
