Turn to Food to Boost Your Mood
A lot of us believe that comfort foods are bad for us and that we need to avoid them. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are a number of foods that actually can raise your moods when you consume them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try several of these.
Eggs, you might be surprised to discover, are wonderful at fighting depression. Just make sure that you do not throw away the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk particularly, are high in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for boosting your mood. This is because they help in improving the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that control your mood. Consume an egg and be happy!
Make a trail mixfrom a variety of seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is because these nuts are loaded with magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin levels. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more of it you have, the more pleasant you are going to feel. Nuts, in addition to improving your mood, can be a great source of protein.
Cold water fish are great for eating if you are wanting to battle depression. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight back depression.
Some grains are truly excellent for fighting off bad moods. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all wonderful for helping you be in a happier state of mind. These grains fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods as well. Feeling starved can really bring you down! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood glucose which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.
Green tea is excellent for moods. You were sure green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is rich in a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Studies show that this specific amino acid can basically stimulate brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while at the same calming the rest of your body. You knew green tea could help you become better. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood too!
Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try several of these instead!
