Many of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are terrible and are to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this is true. At times, comfort foods can be utterly healthy and good for us to eat. There are several foods that actually can raise your moods when you consume them. When you feel a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really terrific at beating back depression. Just see to it that you don’t get rid of the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the egg yolk in particular, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can be fantastic for lifting up your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–function better. Try to eat an egg and feel happier!

Make several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all wonderful for improving your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Nuts, in addition to raising your mood, can be a great protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you wish to fight depression. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can really help you overcome your depression.

Some grains are truly wonderful for driving away bad moods. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really wonderful for helping increase your happiness levels. These grains can help you feel full for longer as well, which can help your mood too. Feeling starved can truly bring you down! These grains can improve your mood because it’s easy for your body to digest them. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.
