Try Using Food to Boost Your Mood

Most of us think that comfort foods are bad for us and that we ought to keep away from them. At times, if the comfort food is candy or another junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be very healthy and good for you. There are a number of foods that really can raise your moods when you eat them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really great at beating back depression. You must see to it, though, that what you make includes the yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can be great for boosting your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–run better. Try eating a few eggs to feel better!

Put together some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all great for raising your mood. This is because these nuts are loaded with magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that directs the brain how to feel at any given moment. The more of it in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not only that, nuts, particularly, are a fantastic protein source.

Cold water fish are great if you want to be in a better mood. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you overcome your depression.

It’s not difficult to overcome your bad mood when you are eating grains. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all excellent for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They can help you feel full for longer as well, which is a mood improver. It’s easy to feel depressed when you are starving! These grains can help your mood elevate since it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your blood glucose which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is truly good for your mood. You were just waiting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea has been found to be rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you be better. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood as well!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these hints instead.
