Turn to Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are not good and must be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. There are a number of foods that, when you eat them, may improve your mood. When you feel a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, try a few of these.

Eggs, you might be astonished to learn, are great at combating depression. Just see to it that you don’t throw away the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk particularly, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–work better. Consume an egg and feel a lot happier!

Make a trail mixfrom various seeds and nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all good for raising your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more serotonin in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not only that, nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein food source.

Cold water fish are excellent if you would like to feel happier. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can really help you battle your depression.

Grains can be great for overcoming a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually excellent for helping increase your happiness levels. These foods fill you up better and that can help improve your moods also. Feeling hungry can be awful! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest and process. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Green tea is actually good for your mood. You were sure it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while simultaneously calming your body. You likely already knew it is not hard to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you are well aware that it helps you to raise your moods also!

So you see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are terrible for you just so to feel better! Try a few of these instead!
