Use Food to Improve Your Mood

A lot of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are bad and must be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. Other times, comfort foods can be very healthy and good for us to eat. There are several foods that actually can boost your moods when you consume them. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional boost, test out a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are great for helping you fight depression. You need to make sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. Every time you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolks especially, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can be great for elevating your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Eat a couple of eggs to cheer up!

Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all great for helping to elevate your mood. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which increases serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that directs your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more of it you have, the happier you are going to feel. Nuts, along with raising your mood, can be a super protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent if you wish to feel happier. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fats. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can seriously boost your mood.

Grains can be great for driving away a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all excellent for helping you feel happier. These grains fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods as well. Feeling famished can actually bring you down! These grains can elevate your mood as it’s easy for your body to digest them. You digest these foods more quickly than other foods which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Green tea is really great for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is loaded with a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid actually induces brain waves. This helps raise your mental acuity while relaxing the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not hard to get healthy when you drink green tea. Now you are aware that it helps you to lift your moods also!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these hints instead.
