Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood

Mostly, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and have to be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. When you are feeling a little down and need an emotional boost, test out a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are terrific for helping you battle depression. You should be sure, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The yolk is the most important part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are rich in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for raising your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat an egg and jolly up!

Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all terrific for helping to boost your mood. This is possible because these foods have a bunch of magnesium which boosts your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The more serotonin you have, the happier you will feel. Nuts, on top of elevating your mood, can be a superb source of protein.

If you want to fight depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all full of omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you overcome depression.

Grains can be good for overcoming a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all wonderful for helping you feel better. These grains fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods as well. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you are starving! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not hard for your body to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Green tea is actually excellent for your mood. You just knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is rich in a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you be better. Now you are aware that green tea can help improve your mood too!

You can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are terrible for you just so to feel better! Try these suggestions instead!
