How to Improve Your Mood with Food

In general, people have been taught to think that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and should be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be completely healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. If you seem to be a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, you may be surprised to find out, are great at fighting depression. Just be sure that you don’t toss out the yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to boost your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–run better. Eat an egg and jolly up!

Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be raised by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. This is possible since these foods are rich in magnesium which raises your production of serotonin. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more serotonin in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Nuts, on top of improving your mood, can be a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you wish to beat back depression. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.

It’s easy to overcome your bad mood when you eat grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually excellent for helping raise your happiness levels. They help you feel full as well which can actually help to improve your mood. Feeling famished can actually bring you down! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. You digest them faster than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is found to be packed full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid essentially induces brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while at the same calming the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you become better. And now you know it can help you be happier as well!

See, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try some of these hints instead.
