How to Improve Your Mood with Food
Many of us believe that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we have to keep away from them. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this holds true. Other times, comfort foods can be utterly nutritious and good for us to consume. Several foods really do raise your mood when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be really great at fighting back depression. Just be sure that you do not throw out the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, especially the egg yolks, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you boost your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–work better. Try eating some eggs to feel better!
Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be improved by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that directs the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more of it in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Nuts, in addition to bettering your mood, can be a great protein source.
If you wish to overcome depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.
Grains can be great for overcoming a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really great for helping increase your happiness levels. They can help you feel full for longer too, which is a mood improver. Feeling famished can be awful! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not hard to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.
