Discover How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

Mostly, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and have to be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be completely healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. There are a number of foods that actually can raise your moods when you eat them. If you seem to be a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at dealing with depression. Just make sure that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. Every time you wish to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk particularly, are stuffed full of B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for lifting up your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Consume an egg and cheer up!

Make some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all good for raising your mood. This is possible because these foods are rich in magnesium which promotes serotonin production. Serotonin is called the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more serotonin you have, the better you will feel. Nuts, on top of raising your mood, can be a super source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent if you wish to feel happier. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fats. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you overcome depression.

Some grains are really wonderful for fighting off bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are great at helping you feel happier. They fill you up better and that can help improve your moods also. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you feel famished! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your glucose levels which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You were just anticipating to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while simultaneously loosening up the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you be a lot healthier. Now you know that green tea helps you to lift your moods as well!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a few of these hints instead.
