Foods That Can Make Your Mood Better
For the most part, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and should be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be really healthy and good for you. There are some foods that really can boost your moods when you eat them. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional boost, test out some of these.
Eggs, you might be surprised to find out, are terrific at battling depression. You need to make sure, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The yolk is the most essential part of the egg in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolk especially, are rich in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be terrific for boosting your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Eat a couple of eggs to cheer up!
Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all great for helping to raise your mood. This is possible since these foods are high in magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you will feel. Nuts, on top of elevating your mood, can be a super protein source.
If you would like to battle depression, try eating some cold water fish. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. DHA and omega-3s are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight depression.
It’s not difficult to overcome your bad mood when you eat grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly wonderful for helping boost your happiness levels. These foods can help you feel full for longer also, which is a mood improver. Feeling hungry can actually make you feel awful! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. You digest these grains quicker than other things which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.
Green tea is truly excellent for your mood. You just knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is loaded with a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while at the same calming the rest of your body. You probably already knew how easy it is to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that applies to your mood too!
Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try several of these instead!
