Use Food to Boost Your Mood
In general, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and must be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be extremely nourishing and good for you. A number of foods really do raise your mood when you consume them. If you seem to feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be really terrific at beating back depression. Just see to it that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk particularly, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can be terrific for elevating your mood. This is because they help in improving the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that dictate your mood. Eat an egg and cheer up!
Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is possible as these foods are rich in magnesium which boosts your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that directs your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more of this chemical in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not only that but nuts, specifically, are a terrific protein food source.
Cold water fish are great if you would like to feel better. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can really help you overcome depression.
Some grains are really excellent for repelling bad moods. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all excellent for helping you feel happier. They help you feel full as well which can actually help to improve your mood. It’s easy to feel low when you feel hungry! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest and process. You digest them more quickly than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.
Green tea is truly good for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid called L-theanine. Studies show that this specific amino acid can actually induce brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while at the same relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you feel so much healthier. Now you are aware that it can help raise your mood also!
Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
